What to expect...
Our procedure for paving a driveway from start to finish is to grade one day and return the following day weather and base permitting. This allows the customer to check the format of the driveway before any asphalt is being laid.
Dedicated to professionalism and accountability, GW Asphalt Paving's owner Leonard Good is on every site for every job.
The durability of the asphalt is determined by how the base was laid, and the quality of the base.
We strongly recommend that our clients wait 24 to 48 hours before walking on their new pavement and wait 4 to 5 days before parking on the driveway. It is recommended to avoid any sharp objects such as ladders, chairs, high heels, bikes etc to not place directly on the asphalt surface for the first few weeks especially during the hot weather conditions. Keep in mind that you should not park your vehicle in the same spot within the first month to avoid tire depressions on the new pavement. Use caution not to turn your wheels in a stationary position to avoid tire marks from occurring.
New asphalt will soften and harden as temperatures rise and fall. Since the asphalt needs time to harden, you may want to be cautious and keep automobile traffic to a minimum for a couple of days and perhaps longer in hotter temperatures.
- Avoid using jack stands or car ramps unless a piece of plywood is placed under them to help distribute the weight.
- Excessive weight from large heavy vehicles can depress your new asphalt. Keep heavy trucks off your new asphalt.
- Turning your tires when parked could scar the asphalt.
- Do not park in the same spot every time.
- Try to protect against gasoline, oil and anti-freeze leaks.
Choosing a paving company
We suggest you request at least 3. Compare them to ensure they cover the same services. If they don't, ask the company to explain the difference.
We suggest consulting the BBB Website where you will be able to review ratings and see feedback about the companies you are considering.
Review GW's rating.
Check references before deciding on a company.
Dealing with an accredited member offers you peace of mind.
If a business has been accredited by the BBB, it means BBB has determined that the business meets accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. BBB accredited businesses pay a fee for accreditation review and monitoring for continued compliance and for support of BBB services to the public.
BBB Code of Business Practices represents standards for business accreditation by BBB. Only businesses meeting these standards and complete all application procedures will be accredited by BBB. The Code is built on the BBB Standards for Trust, eight principles that summarize important elements of creating and maintaining trust in business.
GW Paving has been an accredited member since 1990 and has maintained an A+ rating over the years so you can feel confident GW looks out for you.
Dealing with new companies can sometimes carry risks. If you are promised a warranty and the business is no longer around the following year, the length or warranty does not matter because it won't be honored.
GW is one of the oldest and most established paving companies in HRM, established in 1998. We have established a solid track record and will do our very best to ensure you are happy with our work in the hope you will recommend us.
Many businesses are sold and bought by people who may or may not have the experience and expertise to run it. Dealing with a long established business that has maintained the same ownership is a good sign you have found a paving company that will be around for some time in case any issues arise.
Leonard Good, the founder and owner of GW started his company in 1998 and ensures quality goes into every project he manages.
The business owner has the most to lose if a job goes wrong, affecting the rating and credibility. Leonard Good is overseeing every project himself to ensure the highest of quality standards are met.
This also ensures any questions or concerns you may have are addressed by the person in charge who makes all decisions.
It may seem obvious but not all driveways are created the same. Only using the right equipment, like a roller with a vibrating system, will ensure maximum compaction of gravel and asphalt. A paving machine is required to lay asphalt evenly, creating a smooth surface every home owner desires.
Skills are honed over time, this includes ground conditions and drainage. If the grade (slope) of your driveway is not correct, water may be running towards your house instead of the lawn. This can result in water permeating into your basement walls, creating lots of problems.
Ground conditions are very different across the HRM and can be clay in one area and rocky a few streets over. Conditions call for an approach best suited for each scenario. Did you know that tree roots can wreak havoc on a driveway? In most cases, roots that are 8 inches or deeper are nothing to be concerned about but anything closer to the surface should be addressed.
GW Paving has been working in the industry since 1989. We have seen it all and not much surprises us anymore. With GW you can feel confident the job is being done right.
What you may not know...
Asphalt is virtually maintenance free and cost effective. During the winter, snow and ice melt off quickly while salt can be used without damaging the drive. An asphalt driveway is easily ploughed.
The type of paving required is determined by the condition of the existing surface and foundation of the pavement area. If there are visible cracks, depressions, heaving and or foundation issues with the pavement area, then it is strongly recommended that you replace the entire area. Resurfacing your existing pavement is determined by the condition of the sub-base, if it is in fair condition and there are no visible cracks or depressions then resurfacing is all that is usually required.
Failure to repair cracks as soon as possible will lead to pot holes, crack expansion and ultimately underlying base failure. A good cold poor crack filler should work fine for residential driveways, but for all other application hot poor crack filler is recommended.
Extreme frost and thawing cycles are usually to blame. Other possible causes include thin asphalt, underlying base failure due to extreme load pressures or poor drainage that undermines the base. Low quality asphalt may also be a factor.
Sinkholes occur when a vehicle is parked in the same place for long periods of time. Try to avoid parking in the same spot continuously.
How can chemicals damage a driveway?
If you have a spill, immediately apply dry sand, dirt, kitty litter or absorbent material to the spill to absorb the spill. Do not spray it with a water hose you cause more damage.
